Electrical Fires Don’t Wait for Winter – Is Your Building Prepared?

22 / 01 / 2026

In the UK, commercial properties face a real and growing risk from faulty electrical systems. Between December 2020 and November 2023, fire and rescue services attended 4,634 callouts to businesses caused by electrical fires, a staggering number that highlights the need for proper electrical management, writes Phil Wiltshire, operations director at Pensdown, the electrical people.

These incidents accounted for around 14% of all electrical fires nationwide, with the majority stemming from faulty or misused electrical equipment, which was responsible for 59% of the cases. Heating appliances, cooking equipment and other everyday devices also contributed significantly. Notably, the winter months, particularly December, saw a spike in fire callouts, coinciding with increased usage of electrical systems in colder weather.

These figures emphasise the importance of maintaining safe and compliant electrical infrastructure in commercial properties, particularly for businesses, where the consequences of a fire are far-reaching. As well as the immediate damage to premises, stock and equipment, there is also disruption to operations, reputational damage and potential legal or insurance complications.

Why experience matters

Many of these incidents could have been prevented by using qualified and experienced electrical contractors. While electrical work might seem straightforward, commercial installations are complex and require specialist knowledge of safety standards, load management and regulatory compliance.

Experienced contractors bring several critical advantages such as compliance with safety regulations, ensuring that all installations meet British Standards and fire safety codes. Identifying potential hazards before they escalate into emergencies and guaranteeing that all wiring, equipment and systems operate safely under commercial demands, are other critical factors. Ongoing maintenance and monitoring are also essential, helping prevent future issues and ensuring systems remain compliant over time.

In contrast, using inexperienced or unqualified personnel can leave businesses vulnerable to overlooked risks, unsafe installations and ultimately, catastrophic fires.

For commercial organisations, prevention is always preferable to remediation. Regular inspections, maintenance and upgrades by experienced electrical contractors are essential. This proactive approach ensures that electrical systems can cope with the operational demands of the business while minimising the risk of fire and downtime.

Practical steps should include scheduling routine inspections to catch faults before they escalate. Ensuring all electrical installations are performed by qualified and licensed contractors and replacing outdated or overloaded equipment with modern, safer alternatives, are also essential. Furthermore, implementing comprehensive safety protocols, particularly for high-risk areas like kitchens, workshops or server rooms, should be a priority.

The hidden risks of neglect

Electrical systems in commercial premises are complex and failure to manage them properly can have serious consequences. Outdated or poorly maintained wiring, overloaded circuits, and non-compliant installations can result in downtime, safety hazards and costly repairs. In some cases, electrical issues can even lead to regulatory penalties.

For facilities managers, operations directors, and business owners, the implications are clear - unmanaged electrical risks are more than technical problems - they are business risks. Even a short power interruption can halt production lines, disrupt office workflows, or compromise customer-facing services, resulting in lost revenue and reputational damage.

Commercial organisations are subject to strict safety and compliance regulations. Building regulations, fire codes and health and safety legislation require that electrical installations meet specific standards, both at the point of installation and throughout their lifecycle. For example, regular testing of circuits and equipment is mandatory and records must be kept to demonstrate compliance.

Failure to meet these standards can carry serious consequences. Regulatory inspections, insurance claims and potential legal liabilities are all risks associated with non-compliant electrical systems. By adopting a professional approach to electrical services, organisations can protect their staff, their assets and their bottom line.

Beyond safety and compliance, modern electrical systems offer opportunities for efficiency and cost savings. Energy-efficient lighting, smart power management and automated building controls can significantly reduce operating costs. Commercial organisations that invest in high-quality electrical upgrades often see measurable improvements in energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs and increased operational resilience.

Case for commercial investment

However, in a worst-case scenario situation, the cost of employing experienced contractors is a fraction of the potential losses from fire damage. Beyond the immediate repair costs, businesses may face operational disruption, customer impact and insurance complications. Reliable electrical work protects people, property, and the continuity of the business.

In an environment where electrical fires are responsible for thousands of commercial callouts every year, investing in professional expertise is a clear business imperative, because electrical safety in commercial properties is not a matter to be taken lightly. With thousands of UK businesses experiencing electrical fires in recent years, the risks are tangible and preventable. The solution is straightforward - ensure all electrical work is carried out by experienced, qualified contractors who understand the complexity, compliance and operational needs of commercial premises.

For organisations looking to safeguard their employees, premises and operations, partnering with skilled electrical professionals is not just advisable, it is essential. After all, the cost of prevention is always far less than the cost of fire – as thousands of businesses nationwide, have discovered.
