How To Conform, Other Methods
Contrary to popular belief, the introduction of Part P does not spell the end to
people who want to carry out their own electrical work nor is it the end for
small builders. The sole purpose of Part P is to ensure that the
installation conforms to BS-7671, is safe and conforms to the Building
Regulations and this can be done in a number of ways.
The first option is to submit an application to building control in the same
way that an application is submitted for Building Regulation approval when
constructing an extension. If you do not have a working knowledge of all
relevant regulations you would need to employ and electrical engineer to design
the installation for you as you would an architect. This may prove very
costly as the documentation would need to be very comprehensive and it would
also take the normal 8 weeks or so before it was approved. Building
control also charge for this as they generally appoint an electrical contractor
to inspect the works at first fix and then to test and inspect on completion.
Pensdown's New Service For DIY'ers & Small Builders
The second option is to "partner" an electrical contractor who is
registered under the Competent Person Self-Certification Scheme. We now offer this service and it has become very popular
indeed with DIY'ers and small builders. Electrical work in the average
domestic premises is not rocket science and is well within the capabilities of
most people. What most people understandably lack is a working knowledge
of the regulations which is where we help. Depending on the complexity of
the new works, we tell you exactly how to do the works as if you were one of own
engineers, where you can and cant run cables, what size they should be,
everything you need to know. We also give you a password so that you can
access the "homework" part of this site where you view and download easy to read
data sheets on every subject associated with wiring in domestic
premises. We then inspect your work at first fix, before the cabling is concealed and then test and inspect the installation on completion. We
prepare all of the relevant documentation and submit this in the normal way.
This service is very cost effective even for small works as the charges can be
as low as 50% of what an electrician would cost you per day.
